MONUMENTA : Daniel Buren

Time Out says

This won’t be French artist Daniel Buren’s first encounter with the vast spaces of the Grand Palais, and those who remember his installation there as part of a group show in 2009 will be thrilled to see him return. Back then, he dressed the vestibule in shimmering colours, allowing the sun to sift through the glass walls and explode in a million kaleidoscopic reflections over the building’s enormous nave. This time, he’ll be taking on the majestic challenge of the annual MONUMENTA, when the Grand Palais offers the entire nave to a single artist. Already famous for sculpting the black-and-white columns in the courtyard of the Palais Royal, Buren succeeds Anselm Keifer, Richard Serra, Christian Boltanski and Anish Kapoor, the only other artists so far to have taken on this, Paris’s most monumental of exhibition spaces. As in other years, Buren will need to rely on lightshows on an enormous scale – here’s hoping that the fantasies live up to the execution.
