Established in 1899, Grogan’s has the grubby, broken-in feel of a beloved boozer. It’s hosted Bono, Amy Schumer, and Brendan Gleeson over the years – but don’t expect any star treatment. There’s no card machine, no TV, no music, and absolutely no pretension. The only food on offer are cheddar cheese and deli ham toasties and you’re out of luck if you’re looking for a cocktail list. Art lining the walls is sourced from local artists and every piece is for sale. Describing the staff as curt is generous, but you could earn a free pint if the owner is in. If you want modern amenities and squeaky-clean toilets, look elsewhere. If you want authentic, stick around.
Time Out tip: As you could probably guess, Grogan’s has a strict cash-only policy and doesn’t appreciate reminding patrons about it. The Guinness is great and the dated interior is charming, but Grogan’s real value is its people-watching potential. Grab a seat outside and observe the city’s crazy characters.
