Daydreaming about sand and sunloungers? With travel restrictions around the globe starting to ease, that dream might become a reality. Countries like Italy and Portugal are already welcoming travellers while Spain and Greece are set to allow international flight arrivals very soon. Tunisia is the latest country to unveil plans to open it borders to travellers in the coming weeks.
The north African country, which has an expansive Mediterranean coastline, is set to open up its ‘land, sea and air borders’ to welcome back tourists from June 27 – and no isolation period for new arrivals has been mentioned. Tunisia has been under lockdown and closed to visitors for around three months.
‘Tunisian borders will soon be open to welcome German, European, Algerian and other tourists,’ Nabil Bziouech, the director general of the Tunisian National Tourist Office, recently said.
Tunisia’s economy relies fairly heavily on tourism, so the government are keen to kick-start the summer holiday season. According to the Arab Weekly, ‘Tunisia has forecast that its economy will shrink up to seven percent this year, the steepest drop since 1956 independence.’
